RUNNING ON SAFARI

Africa is home to world-famous runners – men and women who have run barefoot across bare terrain while the freedom of great space and beautiful land spurred them on. Many road and trail runners have gone on safari only to hang up their running shoes while there. No longer! Many lodges now make provision for runners on safari – and with some including this popular pastime as a featured offering.

When you are running here it really feels like you are out in the bush

One such destination is Loisaba Tented Camp in Kenya, which has recently launched its running track. “When you are running here it really feels like you are out in the bush. We have made the track just inside the perimeter of the camp, meaning that you don’t have to be escorted as you are still inside the fence while still having the beautiful view and peace,” said runner and activities co-ordinator, Taro Croze. For those who prefer to be escorted, you can run with a Kenyan running buddy – “try to keep up!”

If running doesn’t form part of the lodge offering at your chosen destination, many managers will likely make a plan on your behalf. From showing you a safe route to sending you to the airstrip with a guide, some lodges will make arrangements for your to go for a run before indulging in sundowners and your bush dinner. One of the most honest sports, you set the distance, the pace, the challenge. From spectacular views and fresh bush air to the intimacy of your footfall on this storyteller’s continent, you stand to be rewarded with your wildest run ever.
